ALL ARE GUARANTEED TO BE IN EXCESS OF 100 YEARS OLD. Because our boxes are GENUINE ANTIQUES and we furnish every one with a Certificate of Authenticity. Please bear in mind our boxes are antique so any marks and/or minor repairs are commensurate with age and are part of the life and history of any antique. Wherever possible we endeavour to retain the original interiors and try not to over-modernise. Often, however, interiors are in. Un-usable and un-saleable states so we refurbish as sympathetically as possible thereby keeping the integrity of the box. We also try not to over-restore box exteriors thereby taking away the character. Whilst we make every endeavour to ensure the information we give is accurate, we can only work within the limits of provenance available and our own experience and expertise. THIS IS A GEORGE III (REGENCY PERIOD). LARGE ROSEWOOD WRITING SLOPE WITH KINGWOOD BANDING. CIRCA 1820 – 1830. (approx 199 – 189 years old). WRITING BOXES WERE A PERSONAL POSSESSION AND NOT A HOUSEHOLD POSSESSION. THERE IS A ROUND BRASS CARTOUCHE AND KEY ESCUTCHEON. Writing slopes and boxes featured prominently on military expeditions around this time. Other types of travellers and in drawing rooms. THIS BOX HAS HAD MINOR VENEER REPAIRS TO THE BASE OF THE LEFT AND RIGHT HAND SIDES. THESE ARE OLD ONES AND PART OF THE HISTORY OF AN ITEM THAT HAS ENDURED LIFE AND USAGE FOR NEARLY 200 YEARS AND DO NOT SPOIL THE APPEARANCE OF THE PIECE. WE THINK THE LEATHER SCIVER IS ORIGINAL BUT NOT 100% SURE, HOWEVER, IF IT IS A REPLACEMENT THEN IT HAS BEEN CUSTOM MADE AND PROFESSIONALLY FITTED. THE SCIVER IS GREEN WITH A GOLD LEAF BORDER AND IMPRESSED EDGES. This is a good period piece enhanced with years of ink stains which we chose not to try and clean thereby erasing the whole essence of a writing slope of this age. A piece of history relating to a personal and precious possession of the owner in Georgian times. Intriguingly someone has written their name in ink,’Ann Wilkes’, in the script style of the day. And can be clearly seen together with other feint’scribblings’. THERE IS THE USUAL SPACE FOR AN INK BOTTLE. THE BOTTLE IS ORIGINAL BUT IS MISSING A LID BUT WE DECIDED TO INCLUDE IT NEVERTHELESS. THERE IS AN ANGLED STAMP COMPARTMENT AND THE OTHER COMPARTMENT COVERS ARE ORIGINAL WITH THEIR ORIGINAL TURNED ROSEWOOD KNOBS. THE UNDERSIDE OF THE WRITING SURFACE HAS STORAGE SPACE WITH A CRISS-CROSS TAPE LETTER/DOCUMENT HOLDER AND THERE IS THE USUAL STORAGE SPACE THE OTHER SIDE. THE BRASS HINGES ARE ORIGINAL AND IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. THE LOCK AND KEY ARE ALSO ORIGINAL AND IN GOOD WORKING ORDER. To enable you to preserve your treasures and/or secrets whether it be jewellery, documents. Specimens or anything of sentimental value. PRESS DOWN GENTLY ON THE LID ABOVE THE LOCK WHEN TURNING THE KEY TO LOCK OR UN-LOCK. THE BASE COVERING IS NEW OLIVE GREEN HESSIAN TRUE TO THE PERIOD. Wherever possible, however, we do endeavour to keep the original base covering. CONTENTS OF THE BOX FOR DISPLAY ONLY. All sizes are APPROXIMATE but only to one or two millimetres.
