French Antique Ecritoire Writing Box Napoleon III Blache of Lyon-Writer Gift
Some of our most loved antiques are these French “ecritoire” or writing boxes. They give a lesson on the human need to express caring elegantly using the written word and hint of something we might well revive in modern times. This is a stunning French Antique Napoleon III Writing Box made by A. Blache of Lyon, France. It has brass stringing around the edges of both lids, veneers of what appears to be rich burl walnut and hardwoods. There is a Boulle brass inlay with tiny mother of pearl flowers on the crest on the main lid. It has a working lock with what, we believe, is the original key and solid brass hinges on both doors. The large door opens to form the writing surface which is covered in the original purple velvet fabric surface. Underneath is a storage area for pens and papers. The smaller lid has the key escutcheon and inside is a lidded tray, a storage area for pens, and spaces for inkwells. The brass cartouche on the lid has script engraved initials that appear to be M. But we have no information regarding any previous owners. Inside, on the lock plate is the name, A. BLACHE, rue Imp 4 Lyon, but we have been unable to find information on that craftsman or his company. It is possible they made this or possibly they acquired it from one of the famous French craftsmen of the time such as Tahan, Giroux, or Vervelle. It is in wonderful condition, even more so when one considers it to be over 125-150 years old. It really has no damage or significant problem of any kind. The original velvet writing surface is separated at the hinge and also has some mild spots from use as is virtually always the case with these antique boxes. Also, there is a tiny repair on the base molding to secure a chipped piece. The inside is intact but has some tiny scratches and some very old ink stains from normal and careful use. You would expect to find some cracking of the burl veneers, possibly a lift in the Boulle inlays but there just are none. Please examine the photos carefully and we are happy to answer any questions. It measures 13 inches long, 9.25 inches wide, 3.75 inches high, and weighs 4 pounds. With all lids open it is 19 inches long. Plus we will include a mother of pearl handled dip pen and crystal inkwell at no charge so you can write a hand dipped note of thanks to the person who richly deserves your note of appreciation.
