French Antique Glove'Gants Box Napoleon III Brass Boulle and Stringing Inlay
The old French Glove or “Gants” Boxes are ones we always watch for in our trips to Paris. They are not common but once in a while we find one and are able to obtain it. We found this one in a Paris Antiques market and, although it has some flaws, we were thrilled to see it. It can be dated to most likely the Napoleon III Era which ran from about 1850 until 1870. Boxes such as this one were made by extremely skilled craftsmen for wealthy, fashion conscious patrons, and gloves were in fashion then. Typically boxes were made of exotic hardwoods, inlays of brass, and a cartouche made with a process called “Boulle” in which thin layers of wood and brass were glued together then hand cut with a fine saw in a laborous process requiring a highly skilled artist. This one has a lovely brass inlaid Boulle Cartouche that has never been engraved with the initials of the owner. Inside it still appears to have the original French Knot, Tuck and Tufted lining which is great but this one is showing its age and most buyers would probably choose to have it restored. We decided to leave it as is for now but would be happy to put in a new silk lining… But we cannot duplicate the original. Some people prefer to have the original lining and we appreciate that. Once it is gone the box is changed forever. You will notice that the front of this one is hinged to fold down, as was typical of these boxes. There is a working lock with what we believe is the original key. Hinges and lock work smoothly. This box is typical in size, 12 inches long, 4 inches wide, and 3.25 inches tall. It weighs one pound, 8 ounces. It is in very good condition for its age with all of the inlays intact and without lifts. The dark surface appears to be hardwood veneer with a lacquer finish. There is some slight drying hairline cracking in some of the veneer, mostly on the back and front. The lacquer finish is quite clean without many dents or nicks but as is typical, does have a few and there are some small chips in the veneer around the top of the front fold down panel. There is also some very slight cracking on the right side near the bottom. We have a few of these available and this is a nice one. We invite you to examine the photos and consider an offer, possibly for multiple ones for a discount. Even with the lining, it is a potentially wonderful gift, plus add an airline ticket for a trip to Paris and see if someone special gets a smile on their face.
