George III period Mahogany & Rosewood crossbanded Work-Box, circa 1800
A very nice George III mahogany and rosewood crossbanded work-box, having lift out compartmentalised lift out interior, lower drawer and working keys. The top, sides and unusually the back, all have rosewood crossbanding, set within a mahogany veneer with ebony stringing. The outer edges are strung with boxwood. The top has the original lock and key and the lower drawer has the original lock with what looks to be a later key, although still old. The top lock has a diamond shaped dark wooden escutcheon. The top opens to reveal the interior which is lined with what appears to be the original moss green velvet and the inner tray can be lifted out to access a storage area beneath. The bottom drawer has a similar dark wooden diamond shaped escutcheon with a small brass inset. The drawer is lined with the same moss green velvet. Sympathetically cleaned, re-waxed and polished, the box is in very good overall condition with good patina. Measurements: 26 cm wide, 17 cm deep and 18 cm high. C leaned and restored to a high standard. All you need to do is wipe over with a soft cloth from time to tim e. You can occasionally use a spray furniture polish that contains bees wax, which will maintain its satin sheen. Please dont use a silicone spray as this could be detrimental to the wax ed surface.
